Ultimaker Innovators 2020: Adi Pandžić Among the World’s 3D Printing Innovators

Ultimaker included Adi Pandžić from Bosnia and Herzegovina on its first 3D printing innovators list in 2020; his team 3D printed over 5,000 face shields during the pandemic.

On 15 December 2020 Ultimaker, one of the best-known companies in 3D printing, published its first “Ultimaker Innovators” list, and among the individuals and teams from around the world was Adi Pandžić from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bosnian news portal Klix.ba covered it on 22 December 2020 in the article “Adi Pandžić from BiH stands shoulder to shoulder with world innovators in 3D printing”.

Key facts about the recognition

  • The 2020 Ultimaker Innovators list is the first in a yearly celebration of individuals and teams achieving greatness in the 3D printing industry.
  • The list is not a competition or a ranking, and it covers the whole 3D printing industry, not only users of Ultimaker printers, materials or software.
  • Ultimaker’s caption states that Adi Pandžić’s team created over 5,000 face shields with 3D printing.
  • According to Klix.ba, Adi Pandžić has worked with 3D printing since 2014, and in 2020, as a PhD candidate and senior teaching assistant at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Sarajevo, he had published around ten research papers on 3D printing materials.
  • Alongside the representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the list included researchers from countries such as the USA, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands.

What is the Ultimaker Innovators list

According to Ultimaker, the list places the spotlight on individuals or teams around the world using 3D printing to transform the ways people work, think and live. Its intent is to celebrate contributions to the industry and honour innovators collectively, which is why it is not presented as a competition or ranked list. Ultimaker deliberately looked at the 3D printing industry as a whole, not just at those using its printers, materials or software.

For 2020, entries were nominated by Ultimaker colleagues, and the final list was compiled by Ultimaker’s Community and Content Marketing teams. It includes individuals and groups demonstrating innovation, by achieving new things with additive and distributed manufacturing or advancing 3D printing itself; impact on customers, colleagues and communities; inspiration, by encouraging adoption of 3D printing and nurturing the skills of others; and diversity of cultures, locations and applications.

From a first printer in 2014 to a global list

As he told Klix.ba, Adi Pandžić has worked with 3D printing since 2014, when he got his first 3D printer to use. That same year, together with colleagues, he launched the Facebook page “CGP design team” to promote 3D design and 3D printing in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“So far we have trained a large number of students, young engineers and innovators and organised many free workshops, training sessions and makeathons. We constantly work with young people, helping them with their projects, and as a result of our work several new companies have been founded by our students, with which they have won many startup competitions in BiH,” he told Klix.ba.

Face shields during the pandemic

According to Klix.ba, the Ultimaker team particularly liked how the team organised makers across Bosnia and Herzegovina and was the first to start producing face shields for medical staff during the first phase of the pandemic, all with 3D printing, ending up with several thousand printed shields. On its page, Ultimaker’s photo caption states that Adi Pandžić’s team created over 5,000 face shields with 3D printing.

Research on 3D printing materials

“For the last two years I have been actively researching 3D printing materials as part of my doctoral studies, with full support from Ultimaker. So far I have published around ten research papers in this field,” Adi Pandžić told Klix.ba. He added that Ultimaker had long followed his work and that of his team, and that these are some of the reasons he was on the list as the representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, alongside researchers from the USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries.

Proud to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina

He said it was a special honour to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Sarajevo at this level. “I am glad we can prove that, despite all the problems we have, we are doing our best to keep pace with more developed countries,” he said.
