Artificial Intelligence for High-Resolution Digital Mammography: Balancing Performance and Computational Constraints

Mammography is one of the most important/reliable techniques/procedures for detecting early-stage cancers and associated abnormalities, enabled by the very high resolution of full-field digital mammography (FFDM). However, this poses extensive challenges for Artificial Intelligence (AI) models that perform image classification. The very high resolution requires computational resources usually not available to most clinicians while the identification of small and extremely varied abnormalities present in breast tissue necessitates the need for large and deep AI models. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), as one of the main image processing models, have shown good performance in biomedical image classification tasks. In this work we develop image classification models based on two well performing CNN architectures, ResNeXt and EfficientNet. To ensure the needed model size, depth and sufficient contextual information present in the image while balancing computational requirements we utilize non-overlapping 512x512 pixel patches. The two models are trained and compared using a recently presented dataset with very high resolution FFDM images VinDr-Mammo.

Recent advances in 3D printing technologies and polymer materials have opened new possibilities in various engineering fields, including the defense industry. Among these developments, the concept of 3D printed ammunition has attracted growing attention due to its low cost, rapid prototyping potential, and material flexibility. However, this trend is also raising concerns regarding the reliability, safety, and possible misuse of such ammunition, especially given the limited research available in this domain. In this study, several series of bullet projectiles were produced using an FDM 3D printer with PLA filament, designed according to NATO standards and integrated into live 9×19 mm ammunition. An experiment was conducted to evaluate firing reliability, weapon function, and target penetration behavior using a wooden board as a simplified terminal medium. All shots were successfully fired and analyzed in terms of operational consistency and penetration depth. Based on the experimental results, a preliminary analytical model was developed to support future research and enhance the predictive understanding of such projectiles. The results indicate promising potential for further development of 3D printed ammunition, with practical implications for both research and controlled applications.

Annealing on the Mechanical Properties of FDM 3D Printed PET Reinforced with Carbon Fibers

This study investigates the influence of the annealing process on the mechanical properties of FDM 3D-printed PET reinforced with carbon fibers (PET-CF), with a particular focus on tensile strength, flexural strength, and the corresponding elastic moduli. Specimens were thermally treated at three different temperatures (80 °C, 130 °C, and 180 °C) and for three different durations (30 min, 120 min, and 210 min). The obtained results were compared with the material specifications provided by the manufacturer to determine the conditions under which the mechanical properties are maximized. To assess the significance of temperature and annealing time on the material behavior, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted. This statistical method enabled the identification of key factors and their interactions affecting the tensile and flexural mechanical properties of the PET-CF material. Based on the experimental data, predictive mathematical models were developed to describe the material's behavior as a function of annealing temperature, time, and their interaction.

Influence of Infill Pattern on Ballistic Resistance Capabilities of 3D-Printed Polymeric Structures

Recent technological advances have expanded the use of 3D-printed polymer components across industries, including a growing interest in military applications. The effective defensive use of such materials depends on a thorough understanding of polymer properties, printing techniques, structural design, and influencing parameters. This paper analyzes the ballistic resistance of 3D-printed polymer structures against 9 × 19 mm projectiles. Cuboid targets with different infill patterns—cubic, grid, honeycomb, and gyroid—were fabricated and tested experimentally using live ammunition. Post-impact, CT scans were used to non-destructively measure projectile penetration depths. The honeycomb infill demonstrated superior bullet-stopping performance. Additionally, mechanical properties were experimentally determined and applied in FEM simulations, confirming the ability of commercial software to predict projectile–target interaction in complex geometries. A simplified analytical model also produced satisfactory agreement with experimental observations. The results contribute to a better understanding of impact behavior in 3D-printed polymer structures, supporting their potential application in defense systems.

This paper deals with a sensitivity analysis of engineering critical assessment, using a fracture assessment diagram of through-thickens axial flaws on pressure equipment. Basic option calculations are performed per BS 7910, using engineering fracture mechanics principles, followed by the provision of assessment points. For evaluation purposes, arbitrary design properties of pressure equipment and temperature-dependent materials properties were used. Several through-thickness axial flaw sizes were used for critical assessment. Furthermore, the sensitivity of critical assessment is evaluated by varying stress states and material fracture toughness. Finally, the sensitivity analysis shows how axial flaw growth may become critical, or its acceptability, depending on varying stress states and temperature-dependent material properties, on selected pressure equipment.

Advancing Phantom Fabrication: Exploring 3D-Printed Solutions for Abdominal Imaging Research

The development of novel medical imaging technologies and treatment procedures hinges on the availability of accurate and versatile phantoms. This paper presents a cost-effective approach for creating anthropomorphic abdominal phantoms. Methods: This study proposes a cost-effective method using 3D printing and readily available materials (beeswax, plaster, and epoxy resin) to create high-fidelity anthropomorphic abdominal phantoms. The three-dimensionally printed phantoms exhibited X-ray attenuation properties closely matching those of human tissues, with measured Hounsfield unit (HU) values of −115.41 ± 20.29 HU for fat, 65.61 ± 18.06 HU for muscle, and 510 ± 131.2 HU for bone. These values were compared against patient images and a commercially available phantom, and no statistically significant difference was observed in fat tissue simulation (p = 0.428). Differences were observed for muscle and bone tissues, in which the 3D-printed phantom demonstrated higher HU values compared with patient images (p < 0.001). The 3D-printed phantom's bone simulation was statistically like that of the commercially available phantom (p = 0.063). Conclusion: This method offers a cost-effective, accessible, and customizable alternative for abdominal phantoms. This innovation has the potential to accelerate advancements in abdominal imaging research, leading to improved diagnostic tools and treatment options for patients. These phantoms could be used to develop and test new imaging techniques with high accuracy.

Experimental Study of Tensile Mechanical Properties of FDM 3D Printed Material and Techno-Economic Analysis Using Definitive Screening Design

In this study impact of various FDM printing parameters on tensile mechanical properties of FDM printed PLA material is investigated. Additional techno-economic analysis is performed to assess the effects of printing parameters on the printing time and material consumption. Definitive screening design (DSD), a relatively new experimental design, is proposed for designing experiments as it enables integration of screening and optimization experiments. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis is performed on experimental data to assess impact of FDM printing parameters on the maximum tensile force, printing time and material consumption. The results indicate that the most influential FDM printing parameters on the maximum tensile force, printing time and material consumptions are the layer height, wall thickness and infill density. Maximum tensile force and printing time are highly affected by printing speed. Developed regression models for prediction of all three responses are confirmed by additional experiments.

Advances in Additive Manufacturing Application in Military Industry

Additive manufacturing (AM) is recognized as a valuable method for producing functional parts in many global industries. It has been increasingly applied even in military manufacturing companies due to its specific characteristics. What started as a simple technique several decades ago, mostly used for rapid prototyping, now takes an important place in military industry when it comes to producing completely functional parts and mechanisms for weapon and different types of equipment. Understanding of different 3D printing methods and compatible materials allows engineers to create standard parts with reduced manufacturing costs and parts that are difficult to machine. One of the crucial benefits of 3D printing application in military industry is flexibility in manufacturing process, especially in terms of production site mobility. That literally means that it is now possible for soldiers to create new parts on 3D printers directly in battlefield, just by receiving right files for 3D printing from engineers. This paper reviews advances in AM application for military industry through different examples of 3D printed weapon and military equipment. Relevant 3D printing technologies are described, along with the discussion of potential problems in this area of manufacturing and possible solutions. The perspective of this method was analyzed based on current challenges, compatibility with experimental techniques and numerical methods, along with some suggestions for modernization and new areas of military application.

Design, Manufacturing and Quality Assessment of 3D-Printed Anthropomorphic Breast Phantom for Mammography

Radiological anthropomorphic phantoms are objects that mimic patient’s anatomy when imaged by x-rays. These objects play a major role in optimizing radiation dose and image quality, allowing repeated exposure without exposing patients to harmful ionizing radiation. The goal of this study was to create a three-dimensionally-printed (3D-printed) phantom that would allow production of images that closely match those of human breast produced in digital mammography. We determined the attenuation properties of the Gray V4 resin using an imaged step-wedge. Gray values in image were associated with corresponding material thickness and a real mammogram was converted to two-dimensional (2D) matrix with elements whose values correspond to material thickness. Geometrical corrections for perspective and projection were taken into account. A standard triangle language (STL) file was used as input for the 3D printer. The quality of the printed phantom was evaluated by comparing its images to those of the real patient mammogram using different quantifying measures in spatial and frequency domain. The calculated similarity index (SSIM) was approximately 0.99, which indicates that SLA 3D printing technology can be successfully utilized to produce mammography phantoms.

Modelling Influence of Heat Input on GMAW Fillet Weld Geometry

One of the most often used welding processes in manufacturing components made of unalloyed structural steels is Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). It is a relatively simple and cost-effective process providing high deposition rates and productivity. Moreover, it can be combined with other processes and/or fully robotized, both of which improve productivity even further. However, maintaining quality control of welds at these high productivity rates can be rather challenging task. There are standards describing the acceptance levels and corresponding weld quality, with some of the considered criteria based on the visible weld geometry. It would be beneficial to connect welding parameters with the weld geometry, so that deviation from defined geometry causes correction of welding parameters. This paper describes influence of heat input on leg size and penetration for GMAW fillet welds of unalloyed steel with thicknesses of 4 and 8 millimetres in horizontal position, with varied parameters being welding current and speed. Dependence is described through models based on linear regression analysis.

The Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation on Mechanical Properties of Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printed Materials

This study investigates the influence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the mechanical properties of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printed materials, specifically polycarbonate (PC) and polylactic acid (PLA) specimens. The research involves conducting experiments on five test specimens of each material exposed to UV radiation and comparing their mechanical properties to those of five control specimens that remain unexposed. The results reveal a significant mean difference between the mechanical properties of the control and UV-exposed materials. UV radiation caused a decrease in tensile strength for the PC material, while the PLA material exhibited an increase in tensile strength. The impact of UV radiation on PLA was more substantial compared to PC. Flexural strength testing showed an enhancement in strength for the UV-treated materials, with UV treatment having a greater influence on the flexural strength of PLA compared to PC. The mechanical properties of PLA were more significantly impacted by UV radiation than those of PC. The study findings suggest that PC and PLA materials exhibit different responses to UV exposure, which may have implications for their practical applications. Further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms governing these divergent responses and to optimize the performance of each material under UV radiation.

Investigation and Prediction of Tensile, Flexural, and Compressive Properties of Tough PLA Material Using Definitive Screening Design

The material extrusion fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique has become a widely used technique that enables the production of complex parts for various applications. To overcome limitations of PLA material such as low impact toughness, commercially available materials such as UltiMaker Tough PLA were produced to improve the parent PLA material that can be widely applied in many engineering applications. In this study, 3D-printed parts (test specimens) considering six different printing parameters (i.e., layer height, wall thickness, infill density, build plate temperature, printing speed, and printing temperature) are experimentally investigated to understand their impact on the mechanical properties of Tough PLA material. Three different standardized tests of tensile, flexural, and compressive properties were conducted to determine the maximum force and Young’s modulus. These six properties were used as responses in a design of experiment, definitive screening design (DSD), to build six regression models. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed to evaluate the effects of each of the six printing parameters on Tough PLA mechanical properties. It is shown that all regression models are statistically significant (p < 0.05) with high values of adjusted and predicted R2. Conducted confirmation tests resulted in low relative errors between experimental and predicted data, indicating that the developed models are adequately accurate and reliable for the prediction of tensile, flexural, and compressive properties of Tough PLA material.

Utilisation of 3D Printing in the Manufacturing of an Anthropomorphic Paediatric Head Phantom for the Optimisation of Scanning Parameters in CT

Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic imaging process that uses ionising radiation to obtain information about the interior anatomic structure of the human body. Considering that the medical use of ionising radiation implies exposing patients to radiation that may lead to unwanted stochastic effects and that those effects are less probable at lower doses, optimising imaging protocols is of great importance. In this paper, we used an assembled 3D-printed infant head phantom and matched its image quality parameters with those obtained for a commercially available adult head phantom using the imaging protocol dedicated for adult patients. In accordance with the results, an optimised scanning protocol was designed which resulted in dose reductions for paediatric patients while keeping image quality at an adequate level.

Experimental Analysis and Comparation of Mechanical Properties of Standard Grey Resins, With and Without Post-curing, and Biocompatible SLA Printed Materials

Stereolitography (SLA) 3D printing is commonly used type of additive manufacturing (AM) technology in many industries. Definitely, the development of AM technologies depends on the development of AM materials. In this regard, one of the priorities is the analysis of mechanical properties as well as understanding the influence of different printing parameters on them. In this paper, four different SLA 3D printed materials are analysed: “Anycubic basic grey resin”, “IFUN denture clear”, “Formlabs Grey” and “BioMed Amber” resin. All materials are printed with 0,05 mm layer height. Also, for “Anycubic Basic Grey” and “Formlabs Grey resins, specimens are analysed with and without UV post-curing. Main goal of this paper is to compare tensile strength values of UV cured and non-cured specimens (UV cured are treated for 10 min in UV chamber) with mechanical properties of biocompatible resins, because there is a theory that UV curing not only helps the material to get better mechanical properties, but it also turns regular resin to the biocompatible one. Secondary goal is to discuss efficiency of 10 times cheaper SLA 3D printer vs an expensive opponent by comparing mechanical characteristics of their specimens along with economic sides. This research is an introduction to exploring and understanding effects of UV curing of basic resins, in order to use them in medicine, veterinary or dental medicine.

Students' performance in teaching neuroanatomy using traditional and technology-based methods

The use of digital teaching resources became widespread and very helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic as an alternative to a traditional course with cadavers. Technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D models, video lectures and other online resources enable three-dimensional visualization of the anatomical structures and allow students to learn more interactively. The aim of this study was to compare students' performance in the traditional anatomical courses in teaching neuroanatomy and technology-based learning methods such as video lectures, 3D models and 3D printed specimens. Four groups of first-year students of Veterinary Faculty established for the practical classes during the academic year 2021/2022 took part in this research. The total number of students participating in this research was 72. Each group attended separately the theoretical lecture with a demonstration based on a different technique; the control group used formalized specimens, while the three experimental groups used video lectures, 3D models and 3D printed specimens, respectively. Subsequently, all groups completed the same questionnaire testing their short-term memory of the neuroanatomical structures. After four weeks students were tested for their long-term memory of the neuroanatomy lecture with the follow-up test containing an identical list of questions. The test scores using video lectures and 3D printed models were significantly higher compared with the group that learned in the traditional way. This study suggests that alternative approaches such as technology-based digital methods can facilitate memorization of anatomical terms and structures in a more interactive and sensory engaging way of learning.

The mechanical properties of materials are obtained by standard mechanical testing, but problem is that there are no official standards that define the method of mechanical testing of FDM materials. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of the strain rate on tensile properties. Three different materials, PLA, tough PLA and carbon PLA, are examined. Strain rate was varied from 0,5 mm/min to 100 mm/min. The test was performed according to ISO 527-2. All specimens are 3D printed with 100 % infill and same 3D printing parameters.

Prediction of Geometry of Pulsed GMAW Fillet Welded Joints of Structural Steels

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is nowadays widely used welding process for structural steels. It is highly efficient and can be easily automatized. Therefore, GMAW is particularly useful for welding of long sections in shop-floor conditions. Such components are prefabricated parts of ship hulls and bridges and parts of heavy machinery. Pulsed variant of GMAW is even more productive and efficient regarding use of filler material and welding time, often used as fully automatized or robotic process. However, such significant production rate requires efficient quality control of welds. The simplest way to do it is by visual inspection, which includes acquiring weld geometry and dimensions. That can be easily done by using optical measuring devices and cameras, which acquire necessary data directly after welding. However, this way of quality and process control needs relationship(s) between input (welding parameters and heat input) and output (weld geometry and dimensions). This paper presents principal relations between abovementioned inputs and outputs for single-pass fillet welds of structural steels. Considered output includes geometrical properties (fillet weld size, penetration, dilution, and reinforcement), while relations are described with fitting curves based on linear regression.

Selection Charts for Structural Steels Regarding Design Criteria and Trending Properties

Existence of standardized materials and product standards for various products gives confidence in complete materialselection process. In case of welded steel products, respective product standards clearly define requirements for designand fabrication. Among many properties, four are mostly considered: strength, ductility, toughness, and weldability.Nowadays products are more demanding than ever, and it is not possible to consider single property anymore, but two oreven three of them. In such cases, selection charts are used, making material selection easier. This paper provides selectioncharts and corresponding design criteria defined in welded product standards for selected structural steel grades. Valuespresented in selection charts are acquired through own researches, as well as from available literature. Consideredstructural steels are grades with yield strength from 355 to 960 MPa, available in three mayor delivery conditions:normalized, thermo-mechanically treated, and quenched and tempered.

Effect of Infill Type and Density on Tensile Properties of PLA Material for FDM Process

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a rapidly growing additive manufacturing technology for various applications in field of engineering. Mechanical properties of 3D printed materials in FDM technology depend on various parameters. Literature suggests that type and density of infill are parameters that affecting the mechanical properties of 3D printed materials, and also have direct influence on 3D printing time and amount of 3D printed material. In this paper influence of infill type and density on tensile properties, 3D printing time and amount of 3D printed material will be investigated and presented. Total of 13 different types of infill and for every type it will be tested 9 specimens with different infill density from 10% to 90%. Every specimen would be 3D printed of PLA material with same colour and 3D printing parameters, also at the same position on printer bed to maximally reduce influence of other factors on mechanical properties of material. The obtained results would give us a wider picture of how to maximally save on 3D printing time and amount of material consumed in the production, but to still keep required tensile properties.

Influence of Carbon Fibers on Mechanical Properties of Materials in FDM Technology

While fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most used additive manufacturing (AM)process today due to its ability to produce products with very complex geometries and with wide range of different thermoplastic materials. Engineers have the option of making parts with the most commonly used thermoplastics, such as ABS, PLA, PET-G, a variety of blends, as well as engineered thermoplastics for aerospace, medical, automotive, electronic and other specialty applications. The aim of this paper is to investigate tensile properties of carbon reinforced PLA and carbon reinforced PET-G materials, and make a comparison of carbon PLA with PLA and carbon PET-G with PET-G material. For every material it will be tested 2 specimens with different 3D printing orientation angle (0˚, 15˚, 30ånd 45˚) prepared according to ISO 527-2. Specimens would be 3D printed on Ultimaker 2+ with steel nozzle and under the same conditions of 3D printing, in order to reduce impact of unwanted factors on material tensile properties. The results of this paper will be useful to see whether it is profitable to use carbon-reinforced materials and whether they really increase the tensile properties of basic materials.

Influence of Material Colour on Mechanical Properties of PLA Material in FDM Technology

Today, one of the most used material in FDM (fused deposition modelling) 3D printing technology is PLA (polylactic acid). On market today, there are many different companies that producing PLA material filament for 3D printers with different diameter and colours. Previous research showing that there are so many parameters in FDM technology that affect on mechanical properties of 3D printed material like layer height, infill density, temperature etc. Topic of this article is to investigate whether colour of PLA material effect on material tensile properties and in what amount. It will be tested more than 10 different colours of PLA material, and for every colour it will be tested 3 specimens. Specimens are prepared according to ISO 527-2, and all printed with same 3D printing parameters and with 100% infill. Also, all used materials are of same company and for every colour specimen will be 3D printed from same filament spool. All this is done to avoid other parameters to effect on material properties. The results of this study will be useful for colour selection of the PLA material without compromising the material tensile properties of 3D printed product.

Post Service Strength Properties at Elevated Temperature of Steel 14Mov6-3

Reliability and safety of thermal power plant components are issues that have become much more important in recent years, so the assessment of damage and of the risk associated with failure have become increasingly important. Records of operating conditions and preventive maintenance for a component that has failed, and for the system as a whole, are relatively good sources of background information. Direct post service evaluation represents an improvement over history-based methods, because no assumptions regarding material properties and past history are made. In order to investigate decrease of strength properties at elevated temperature after prolonged service, low-alloyed steel 14MoV6-3 exposed 194.207 hours to service conditions, has been compared with same, but virgin material. In addition to the standard strain rate test, tensile testing at elevated temperature 540 °C with high strain rate and slow strain rate is also performed. As a result of prolonged lifetime of exploited material in service there is a significant degradation of strength properties.

Economical Aspects of Industrial FSW Application

Although FSW is relatively new joining technique, with still unexplained phenomenology of joint creation, it has been widely used in industry. Great applicability has been demonstrated, in particular for welding of various aluminium alloys in many different configurations. As a main advantages, over conventional joining techniques for such alloys, are considered possibility of welding profiles with complex geometries with thickness up to 50 mm, excellent metallurgical continuity, as well as possibility to avoid preheating and post weld heat treatment. However, main disadvantage of this process is inability to easily achieve optimal welding parameters, simply because there are no exact mathematical equations describing their mutual relations. This leads to necessity of test series examination. This paper giver overview of main economic advantages and disadvantages of this welding process, as well as comparison with conventional welding processes used for aluminium and its alloys. In this way, it has been estimated whether or not is justified to use FSW when alternative welding process is available.
