Additive technologies

Additive manufacturing – technologies, materials and design

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, builds parts layer by layer from a digital 3D model – material is added only where it is needed. In engineering and medical projects I use and advise on the following additive technologies:

FDM technology

Material extrusion (MEX) of thermoplastic filament: PLA, PETG, ASA, ABS, PC and carbon-fibre composites. For functional prototypes, tooling, brackets and larger parts.

SLA technology

Resin vat photopolymerization (SLA, DLP, MSLA): high accuracy and smooth surfaces – for detailed prototypes, medical and anatomical models and moulds.

SLS technology

Powder bed fusion (PBF), typically PA12 nylon: durable functional parts without support structures and small production runs.

Additive manufacturing materials

Selecting materials for additive technologies by strength, temperature, environment and cost – backed by my own research on mechanical properties of 3D printed materials.

Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)

Designing parts for 3D printing: build orientation, infill, wall thickness, part consolidation and weight reduction.

DFM – design for manufacturing

Adapting products to conventional or additive manufacturing for lower cost, simpler assembly and reliable series production.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is additive manufacturing?

Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, builds parts layer by layer from a digital 3D model. The most common additive technologies are FDM (filament extrusion), SLA (resin photopolymerization) and SLS (powder sintering); the right technology and AM material depend on the part’s function.

What is the difference between FDM, SLA and SLS?

FDM melts and deposits plastic filament – cost-effective for functional prototypes and larger parts. SLA cures liquid resin with light for the finest detail and smooth surfaces. SLS fuses powder (usually PA12) with a laser for durable parts without support structures.

Where is DR.PAX based and do you work with international clients?

DR.PAX – Adi Pandžić, PhD is based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and works with clients across the Balkans, Europe and worldwide. Most projects can be run fully online.

What 3D printing services do you offer?

3D printing of prototypes, functional parts and scale models using FDM, SLA and SLS technologies, including advice on materials and print preparation.

What does product development include?

Idea analysis, concept and industrial design, SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD modelling, simulation, 3D printed prototypes and technical documentation for manufacturing.

Do you offer medical 3D printing?

Yes. Together with clinicians, Adi Pandžić, PhD creates 3D printed anatomical models, surgical training models, implant moulds and imaging phantoms from CT and MRI data.
